Observation Deck: A Digital Toolkit for Librarians

Madison Public Library, in collaboration with Skokie and Waupaca Public Libraries, developed the Observation Deck, a librarian's toolkit application funded by an IMLS grant. The project aimed to revolutionize how libraries capture, analyze, and communicate the impact of their programs, especially in areas like creativity and art where value is often qualitative. Extensive research informed the development of this flexible, customizable tool designed to systematically gather qualitative outcomes, support storytelling, and align with each library's unique goals. The toolkit's mobile-first data collection and desktop-first storytelling features offer a comprehensive, user-centric platform that empowers libraries to effectively showcase their impact. The project's brand identity, inspired by the concept of a "Color Wheel," reflects the toolkit's systematic yet vibrant approach, creating an inviting and accessible tool for libraries nationwide.
